Does anyone have an outer door handle (not installed) that they can look at for me?
I just got a set from someone selling "new in the box GM handles". When I got them, they just didnt look right. (look like reproductions)
I recontacted the person, and he said " i bought those off ebay when i first started to buy parts for the restoration. the seller that i bought them from told me what i told you, that they where new gm in the box. "
I need to know if there are any "GM" stamps or markings on the real ones- the ones sent to me have a number stamped on them, but it doesnt correspond to the #on the box. Any other ways to tell?
I have a new right hand "imported"handle. The numbers on the box are
82-5529(RH) then printed below that line is"Replaces 14011820"
Look at the center lever it's usually lighter gauge then original. The fit of the handle to the housing is not always good, the plating is wavy, and the rod that holds the handle to the housing is staked at the end. The GM handle I have uses a heavier pin and the housing has more metal around the hinge hole. The rod has a flat stake to it and in general is a much better piece.
These imported handles are all over for about $20 each, that's about all their worth in my opinion.

Gary,
On the imported handle, if you turn it upside down, are there numbers cast into it near the upper lip? Also, on the inside - visible only when you depress the handle, is there a chrome finish?
I just pulled mine out of the box. I have one of each a new one and an old one. Assuming the old one is original it has the a tiny Chevy coach stamped in between the bolt holes real close to where it says L F, then pointing the other way in has a smaller A.
The only thing cast into it underneathe is a "R" and on the the housing lip "01" and Taiwan :mad
The inner housing has a satin type finish, not chrome plated.

thanks to all for your help. I checked the original GM ones installed in my car- (just the inner housing as its still installed), and the inside is finished in chrome, unlike the new ones I got- they are satin finish. Also, there are casting numbers on the new ones- unlike the GM ones.
Just as a warning, the person who sold me these "new in the box GM handles" is a forum member, and is currently selling things in the C3 parts section. I will contact him and try to get my money back.
