STARTER NOISE QUESTION
LAST WEEK I REPLACED THE STARTER ON THE VERT. WHEN I TURNED THE KEY I HEARD A GRINDING SOUND. I THEN JACKED UP THE VEHICLE AND HAS THE WIFE CRANK THE VEHICLE. IT MADE THE SAME NOISE. MY QUESTION IS WHEN THE GEAR IN THE STARTER POPS OUT TO ENGAGE THE FLEXPLATE DO THE STARTER GEAR TEETH EXTEND THE ENTIRE WIDTH OF THE FLEXPLATE? BECAUSE UNDER CLOSER INSPECTION, I NOTICED THAT THE AREA ON THE FLEXPLATE WHERE THE STARTER GEAR ENGAGED, BEGAN TO TAKE THE GOLD COLOR OFF THE FLEXPLATE (TEETH ON NEITHER ARE NOT DAMAGED) WHICH TELLS ME THAT THE STARTER GEAR IS NOT EXTENDING THE WIDTH OF THE FLEXPLATE. IS THE STARTER DEFECTIVE? PLEASE HELP. I REALLLLLLLLLY NEED HELP ON THIS ONE. SHOULD THE VERT START, IT WILL BE THE FIRST TIME IN THREE YEARS.

It sounds as though you need to add shims between the starter and the block which would let the starter gear engage completely into the flywheel gear. These shims can be bought at any part store. Was there any shims there when old starter was removed? Good luck.
