Re: Shift kit or throw away the spring (munday)
Depands on which tranny, how it's set up, and how old it is, and then of course which spring in the valve body....loosely defined the 'valve body' is that iron piece bolted onto the case with a plate and two gaskets sandwhiched in there, thing is, it's FULL of springs at least one per valve/or valve set....maybe two sometimes even more.....so those controll valves are the primary function of the 'valve body'...and are about 1/2 inch diameter.......NOW having said that, in some valve bodies, there is a unit about 2" diameter known as an accumulator valve...that unit has a spring in it too, and depending on what the design is,....you may either remove the spring, OR maybe replace it with a solid spacer?? not sure there, but that accumulator action allows the cushioning of the clutch application by running a parallel drain to the oil source from the pump....one end of the 'pipe' goes to the clutch pack, the other goes to the accumulator valve which is spring loaded, and depending on how they controll the drain back/emptying of the accumulator valve volume, relaxing the spring behind that piston....it may be a bad thing to just remove the spring,.....I would imagine that stiffening it would be good as the clutches would be forced engaged much faster, but if the function of the accumulator valve depends on that spring, maybe not....
I suspect in most trannies, you can just remove the spring, allowing the valve piston to stay at bottom of the travel....but then the shifts may be violent as hell, and tear up something else, like a steel planetary set....they make say 5 planet gear sets for a 700r4, but the stock ones are 3 planets....and therefore weak....
I"m no expert, but trying to learn more about auto trannies....they ain't nuttin' but plumbing, you know....
hot's on the left, cold on the right, and crap flows downhill....
