My muncie M20 makes a loud whining sound in first gear only. I discovered that if I pulled back on the shifter when this happend the sound would get quieter, but not completely go away. Now I have it torn apart and don't see anything obvious that would cause the sound, but I have never done this before so I don't have any experience. Any input would be greatly appreciated. :banghead:
Do you have a rebuild kit? they come with new bearings, syncro's, keys, etc. You might have play in the slider/fork area. checkthe http://www.5speeds.com site for more info and kit info.

Upon further inspection of the parts, everything looks great except one of the sliders, one shift fork, and the reverse gears are shot. All of the other gears look fine as far as I can tell. I had this tranny rebuilt back in '96 with new syncros, bearings, etc. and all that stuff still looks great. I have a Hurst comp plus shifter on it and it was adjusted perfectly as far as I knew. I suppose I will live with the noise rather than dump a sh**load of money into it.
Mine made that same noise right after I had it rebuilt at a local shop.
To make a long story short, when they reassembled the trans, they used RTV rather than the supplied gaskets. You need to use the gaskets in the kit for the required clearances, or you will get noise in 1st.
