I currently run a chrome 14" drop base that's been on the car for 8 years and works fine, but to be honest,I'm getting bored with it. It also hits my HEI distributer slightly,so I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions for something a bit different. Maybe a 10" round,or I've seen Edelbrock has a triangular setup. What fits, looks cool and won't crack my 80's hood when I slam it shut?

Summit has a few billet oblong units in the 12x8 1/2 range . They run about $85 and are 3 1/2 inches tall. I'm thinking of going with one myself and getting the valve covers to match. Check them out on their site. They are under the Summit product name.

I recently put a K&N chrome air filter on my 76. It is 14" in diameter, but it does not conflict with the distributer. It fits under the hood fine.
Re: Need ideas for a different air cleaner. (The Money Pit)
I had the same chrome setup as you.
Now, I have the K&N extreme flo lid, and a K&N 14"x3" element.
Yeah, the drop base hits the distributor shield and the cap underneath.
I personally think I would've been better off, if I had gone to something like a 9"x2" element, with an extreme flo lid. But I like the big air cleaner look, versus the tiny air cleaner.
The bugeye edelbrock triangle element is a rumored fire-hazard.
Plus, the debate over paper vs cotton elements is interesting.
Good luck!
Re: Need ideas for a different air cleaner. (The Money Pit)
I don't have any ideas on a new setup but I was wondering what all of you were doing with the fan shroud area that gets bared.
On my 78 I just went to the 14" dropped chrome Edelbrock and not sure how to dress up the area where the duct work went.
Re: Need ideas for a different air cleaner. (The Money Pit)
you can get replacement filters anywhere..autozone, advance, summit. KN makes one too, but i haven't had a chance to make the purchase..probably end up with that next year. the only mod i did was shave about 1/2" off the bottom so that it fit alittle more flush with the carb...looks better plus doesn't hit the hood on hard revs.

:iagree: I just bought one to sit on top of my fuel injected intake. Rather than shaving the bottom, I'm going with a 1" spacer on top of the throttle body to push the filter through the hood for ram air. Will also change out to the K&N element.
I like the looks and it's heavy aluminum, ball milled on top.
