Default New Carb or Rebuilt?

Just purchased a 1979 Vette, which I suspect has a vacum leak within the carb (all hose's checked) Runs fine cold but when it warms up RPM is all over the place and the engine runs rough and will not pass inspection due to high Hydro Carbons I'm struggling whether to have the carb rebuilt or by a new Edelbrock carb (#1903). The Rochester carb on the car is a 17058203, any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I'm new to the world of Vettes. I'm leaning toward new not knowing the person that will rebuild the carb and the limitations on warranties should I have problems later on.

You could have your carb rebuilt. There are several people whom do this. Above all do NOT waste your money on a over the counter rebuilt. They are nortorious for being total junk. Even the ones rebuilt by major companies never work. After exchangingt ten of them the guys at the parts places will not be happy and will have you chasing a bunch of other problems. SAVE your original carb.. You will never find another. A new Edelbrock Q jet replacement is a good choice. There are made from Rochester tooling and and are direct fit bolt on and drive units.

While the carb you have may need a rebuild or, as you indicate, you may end up getting a new Edelbrock, have you first tried to clean up the one that's on it? Buy a can of Gum-Out and give it a few shots inside as well as on the outside linkage. Amazing what a little TLC will do to old parts. You might save some big bucks that way. Good Luck and Welcome! :seeya

Thanks for the reply, Thats what I concerned about, buying an over the counter rebuilt verses having my carb rebuilt or buying a new one. Do you have suggestions on good places to have the carb rebuilt? Again I leaning toward a new edelbrock and keep the old carb and have it rebuilt at a later time. But this all depends on price and if I can find someone that get that old carb back to new.

The Carb Shop in Costa Mesa California is on that comes to mind. There is a Forum member (Lars) who does them from time to time. Also search the http://www.ncrs.org board for their favorites.

The carb no. you listed is for a 1978 corvette, L48 with manual transmission.
No. 17059203 is for a similar equipped 1979. Only difference in the numbers
is an 8 for 78 and 9 for 79. Perhaps you typed an 8 instead of a 9 or
someone changed the carb.

Especially if you determine it is the correct carb for your car, would
recommend having the original rebuilt. A professional rebuild including
replating will be under $400. You will wind up with the carb that was
engineered for your car. Also everything will hook up with no
adapters. I believe the original carb has a flow rate of around 750CFM.

Have used this company several times with good success: http://www.webcutter.com/newstore/de...00002&offset=0

They are located in New Woodstock, NY so shipping should be two days
from NJ.

Rebuild the Q-Jet it is will run well. Have Lars give you a quote or like the earlier post said the Carb Shop or I feel Sean Murphy who was with JET and now on his own is as sharp as the come. His business web address is:
