Default Cam choice delimma

454, 9.25 compression, Torker II intake, Ported oval port heads, 2500 stall, hooker sidepipes with JCL's

I'm pretty sure I want to stick around 230 deg of duration @ .050 for drivability, power brakes, etc. Unless someone convinces me that's too mild. Hydraulic for streetability.

2 cams I'm looking seriously at:

Lunati 230/230 dur with lift of .544/.544

Or Crane 222/234 duration with .529/.525 lift

I'm leaning towards the Lunati becuase I'm guessing it would give more HP with the higher lift and intake duration.

This is a weekend driver, but I want total streetability for future sale and use.

Any thoughts?

Hope someone with experience on the 454's lays some good advice as that is the combo I have and want a more radical cam. Waiting to hear.

Ide go with the lunati. The higher lift will give you better TQ. The 454 can handle 230 duration @.050 no sweat. Thats a mild cam for a 454. Should be totally streetable for power acc. and have good manners.

I was running a crane roller cam simliar to the one you list in a 350 with about 9/1 comp and other then leaking valve stem seals it ran great. I would think the first cam would be a better one for high performance street driving but I would even go up to 235 duration if you got a stick.

I'm running pretty much the same set up, except for more compression and I went with the Lunati 00026 with 232/239 dur and .549/.558 lift. This cam was a good choice for me as it pulls good, idles at 750 rpm, and the sound thur the side pipes with rev. flow mufflers is awesome. The only vac problem I have is with raising the headlights (slow, maybe not vac problem), but the brakes work fine. So I myself like the Lunati. Good Luck.

blunsford:
I see you've got an after-market intake, headers (a guess here?), etc., so you're not a 'numbers-matching' kinda-guy.
Why-not just 'hang' a vacuum-reservoir-cannister under the hood? You can run as big a 'stick' as you'd like, with-in reason.
I have a 244* @ .050" cam in my 355" in my Z28 street/strip car, and I have PLENTY of brakes with the reservoir...

My goals were the same for my car. I'm sorry, but going really big will lead to issues. What is streetable for some, is not for others. This was my first big-block build-up, so I erred on the conservative side, and the combo kicks some butt. yeah, I could have gotten a bit more peak HP over 6000rpm, but who cares. It pulls from idle to 6400rpm (peak HP at 5600). Grandma could drive my car, but she wouldn't want to put her foot down on the loud pedal. Seriously, though, streetability is shockingly docile and I'm very pleased.

9.5:1 CR, AFR 305 CNC ported heads, Edelbrock Air-gap intake, 3.36 gears, 5-speed manual... Comp Cams 230/230, .578/578, 110 LSA.

Combo made 434rwhp/450rwtq (515hp/530tq flywheel) on a chassis dyno. This was with a winter tune in the midde of the summer (read: too rich). Now that its gotten cooler, the thing will have leaned out some, and if I dyno'd it tomorrow it would be over 450rwhp easily.

The major difference is the heads/intake... probably worth 50-60hp or so. With your auto trans, I would be nervous about going any bigger than the cams you listed if you want the thing to have perfect street manners. With my stick trans, I could probably go up another 6-8^ duration and not have a problem.

Also, mine is a hyrdaulic roller setup.
