car dies when in gear
well i htought it might be the alternator, but it's not I just got another...charges good
car starts up fine and idles at 1000, but when I put into gear it drops to about 500 then sputters and dies....please advise.

It could be a number of things, but I'd check the timing and check your distributor to make sure that your advance is working correctly.

One other item, disconnect and plug the vacuum line to the trans vacuum modulator if the timing etc are ok. If not put a clamp on the power brake line and then the PCV lines. These are the the biggest vacuum loses.

Both of the previous ideas are important to check.
It is possible that your carb is in need of rebuilding. The choke might be fried, or your idle circuit is just old.
My '69 was the same, and after getting my carb rebuilt, it idles much better.
