Default Thermostat

Does the spring go up or down?

The AIM doesn't address it. The other repair manual is non-committal, saying it could be spring up. The guy at the parts store says spring down.

You should have posted this as a poll! :D
I think the spring goes down INSIDE the manifold. As the water/antifreeze heats up inside the engine it causes the thermostat to open allowing the water to move through the upper hose into the radiator and cool down via air moving through the radiator fins.
But I could be wrong

Dep--you're right that it should be a poll. Here's what the Haynes Manual says:

"Note how's it's installed (which end is up), then remove the thermostat."

Well, what if Bubba before you put it in upside down??

"Make sure the correct end faces up--the spring is normally directed into the housing."

I've always installed them with the thick, round cylendrical side inside the intake and the side that looks like a little dome on the outside. I also drill a 1/8th inch hole in the base just in case the stat should fail. :chevy

yep, spring down into the manifold, i also drilled two holes, heard that it puts less stress on the water pump and improves cooling.

Drilling a hole or two will allow some air to find it's way out of the engine, and will take it longer to warm up. But if the air is there, then you didn't flush and fill properly to begin with. The holes won't really allow it to run cooler unless you drill a bunch of them.

If the t-stat does stick closed then the holes won't save you. Imagine a rag stuck in there. Some fluid will pass but not enough to maintain a safe temp. The water pump really doesn't care if the t-stat is open or not. There is always a loop of flow. The open t-stat just increases the length of the loop. Like when your heater hoses are valved open or shut.

180 is the best minimum to run your engine. Actually 190 +/- 5 constant is best overall.

Controversial subject.

Spring aint got nuttin' to do with it. Put the brass sensor in the manifold first (down in the engine water). When it gets hot it causes the spring to 'coil' and open the valve. C'mon guys.....

I always install them with the spring down into the block and the pointed side up into the neck to the radiator. I do not thing they sit very well if you install them upside down. :chevy

Sensor, pellet, BB...whatever. The 'heat sensor' and spring are usually in the same vicinity. I was alluding to the direction of the stat. No insult intended and you are correct, the darn thing prolly wont even fit upside down.
