Mallory Unilite Conversion
After reading the directions, first paragraph asks something I'm uncertain of. I'm not the electrical guru by any means...
Question 1, it's stating in the directions that I need find out if my stock 74 vette has a ballast resistor. Can anyone out there answer this? I dont' have the test equip to perform the test they are asking... which is to measure voltage at the coil......
I'm guessing with my luck, I'm going to be purchasing part 700 aren't I?
I installed one of these on my '69 quite a few years ago. The same question had me stumped too. I found out that my car (assume yours too?) has something called a "calibrated resistance lead". It lowers the voltage going to the coil.
When I installed my Unilite, I removed the resistance lead at the bulkhead connector at the fuse block and replaced it with a regular 12 gauge wire. It's a tough place to get to, but it will work forever. Other people may have better ideas ot easier ways of doing that.
Best of luck to you,

Your best bet is to get the part #700 Mallory resistor and run a 12V keyed hot lead to it. If you dont use a resistor, you WILL burn up a unilite module, and they are about $100. It's just a matter of time. Also, if your car had points from the factory, there is an additional wire that goes to the coil to provide 12V to the points to aid in starting the car. Just make sure you don't have 12V going into the module!!
