Default ?? About replacing calipers

My car is in need of brake work. Rather than trouble shoot the system, I'm just going to replace the whole damn thing from power booster to rotors.

I've been researching the products available but have a couple questions.

I understand that originally my calipers came with a lip seal. That seems to be the major problem with the stock brakes since if the sit for periods of time they start to leak. Guess what, mine leak.

I see calipers come in a couple different configurations:
original
stainless steel sleeved
o-ring and
stainless steel sleeved o-ring

Which is the caliper I should replace mine with?

My own 2 cents: get the o-ring stainless steel ones. The most major cause of brake problems is rotor run-out. Be sure to check for this if you want your brakes to last, no matter what kind of calpers you get. Watch out for the cheaper priced rotors from our friends in China, I have nothing against these fine people, but they are not known for their high-quality steel exports.

I agree 100% with bigfish. Runout is the major problem with the weak seal of the lip as a close second, and no matter what you do, your gonna have runout after awhile. Combine both and your sure to have a leak somewhere. I just redid my entire system last spring with stainless sleeved and the O ring from Vette Brakes and products. They have excellant products and service. :yesnod:

What exactly is rotor runout? Is that have the rotors turned too many times and them getting too thin?

So it seems that the stainless steel sleeved O-ring calipers are the way to go, but why?

I understand the need for the O-rings, but why do the calipers need a stainless steel sleeve?

A rotor that is not 100% true will wobble slightly causing the pistons to pulsate in their bores which sucks in air, giving you a soft pedal. O ring calipers do not do this

*** but why do the calipers need a stainless steel sleeve?***
Because the bores of the original calipers had a corrosion problem, whereas stainless steel calipers will not.

When I was having an air pumping problem with my rears on the '80 I used to have, I put Vette Brakes Products rear O-ring calipers on it and never had a soft pedal or problem again :D
