Possibly, the L82 is more extreme than the L48 cam, but most of the completely stock cars I've heard sound like sewing machines at idle instead of the potato-potato huge cam cars. I'd say the first thing to check is your idle mixture on the QJet, then check the vaccum lines.
I got a book that claims the L82 idle is about 800 in gear... I have particular concerns about this involving the stock A/C setup... my engine (not an L82 anymore technically) idles fine around 600 or so, but seemed awfully rough after i installed A/C... brought it up to around 800 in gear with compressor engaged and it's quite a bit smoother... makes for an awfully high idle when not in gear and the A/C is off, though... anyway just my situation, hope it helps... :)
My '79 L82 was lopy and rough at idle until I swapped out the stock transmission. The factory torque converter must have a very low stall because it really drags down the engine at idle. In any case, the L82 cam makes the engine lope more at idle than the L48.
With regards to A/C, there is supposed to be a throttle solenoid on the carb that increases idle speed when the compressor kicks in.
page: ah, that sounds like a very sensible thing to have, lol... don't think i have one on my edelbrock, unfortunately... :nonod: but good to know for future reference, thanks...
My 80 L82 also has a noticable lope at idle, I tuned and adjusted with very little change. I like the lope so I stopped worring about it. As previously mentioned the idle stop solenoid on the 80 kicks in when the AC is selected. This should be adjusted to keep the idle at around 700-800 with the AC on. You can check to see if it is working, you will hear it click and the plunger will extend.
I'd suspect either a need for vacuum system or carb refresh. I found that replacement/removal of 20 years of prior ownership mods to vacuum mgmt systems was the final solution.
