All right, I just replaced my q-jet. Put a #17058228 in with same primary rods, jets, secondary rods and so on as my stock q-jet.
I'm thinking the idle mixture might be too lean, my dad leaned it out when we found out my carb was in dire need of a rebuild. The old carb had a lot of loose screws, dry gaskets and was in generally bad shape. The primary throttle venturi had been HAMMERED at some point.
Would a lean idle mixture cause surging between 1000-1500 rpm though? I definitely have a stumble going from idle to gas, but that surging is odd too... cruising down the road at higher RPM it feels ok. But has to be above 2300 or so. Below that and it's a little quirky.
Should I just give up and buy a new one? I don't wanna invest much more time into this than I have to- I want it to run right and run well.

New doesnt mean good. Lars was telling me that many pumps are cheapo and swell in the bore because they are not compatible with some fuel additives.
I had a new one too. Swelled in the bore. Lars found me a good one. Now no problem.
It sounds similar to my 1980 q-jet - as I would hit the gas there would be a stumble, but it would seem to even out - I checked the whole carb over and as per Lars rebuild info I noticed that the accelerator pump cup had swelled - When I removed the cup it looked okay, no cracks or anything like that but it was after a reassembled that carb that I realized the accelerator pump did not fit all the well - I found that the accelerator pump cup had swelled and it was binding as per Lars info - ordered an Echlin accelerator pump replacement and the carb runs fine now.
Hope this helps - let me know how it works out :)
