Default Transmission Problems Again - PLEASE HELP!

Nice day went for the ride again today. Transmission (TH400) started acting FUBAR again. Previous Post http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=692222.

Although it was fine when I started out got about 15 miles and parked for a bit at a local reservoir just chilling. After I went to leave the tranny started whining and not wanting to shift into 3rd. Although it was shifting into second fine. Pulled over into another lot at the reservoir. Screwed around with the vacuum hoses everything seemed cool on that end and at the tranny.

Then I'm thinking must be overheating again in my head. So I hung out for a long while probably 30-45 minutes or so to see weather it would atleast be cool for a little bit back towards the house. After I went to leave though it wouldnt shift into reverse and I had to push her back so I could get outta there in drive. Had to hobble my way home real slow (GOT PASSED BY A SATURN!!! :mad )

Most of the way back it was going into 2nd fine until I got about a mile from the house then it didnt even wanna do that.

Please Help me out here. Does it sound like a rebuild and I am screwed or do you still think Its something with the setup. I have no tranny cooler other than the far side of the rad and a jegs 2200-2600 TC. Its making the whining noise even in park and just a slight rev... is it the TC?

Any thoughts are welcome :mad :mad

:( :cry

Check fluid levels on level surface when hot. How many miles on trans? Did you rebuild it at all before installing converter?

Yeah I've checked the fluids many times. I didnt do anything with the tranny before I put the new convertor on (I shoulda taken it somewhere or inspected it myself with all my engine out downtime). Since then its only been 75 miles since then. The car has alot on it but I am pretty sure the guy before me had done alot with the tranny (thats what worries me he was Bubba incarnate). Supposed to have a shift kit installed and yadda yadda.

Can people name all the connection I should check i.e. vacuum modulator, gear shifter, and?. I already dropped the pan to change the filter the fluid looks pretty dirty but no huge foriegn objects or anything.

I actually have a question there too the filter was hanging by a small bolt with like a 1/4 inch (maybe little more) of a shoulder on it. Is that Right? Makes filter pretty darn loose.

The previous filter is some micro filter thing looks like the only element in it is at the neck that feeds into the tranny. Possible that was just mad clogged and holding me back?

Iam no trany expert but I do know that all mine had was a small shoulder bolt holding the fillter on. It hug down pretty loose but I never had any trouble with it. The trans fillters always came with a O-ring but I never figured out where it wa suppose to go so I just through it away. The only problem I had with it was I couldn't get it to stop leaking around the pan more than a month or so. It's not a problem any more

Spook, Two words: rebuild time. :smash: Given all you have said there are several serious problems all of which are internal. Sorry

The o-ring is for the top of the feed tube. That unfortunately is the least of my worries. I am thinking that my detent solenoid is stuck but I am not sure why/how. There is an electrical hookup on the drivers side infront of the speedo for this right guys???

Yeah rebuild/upgrade would be the way I would choose if I wasnt in my current position.

Spook: Detent solenoid. Do you mean kickdown or downshift soldnoid?
Yes, it is located under the dash by your accelerator linkage. Have to get on your back and look up. You'll see a gizmo with a button on it that gets depressed when you florr the pedal. It is a simple plug-syle connector.
I disconnected mine when I was having shift problems. Mine wouldn't shift out of 1st gear. Turned out to be a bad muodulator. Disconnecting it just means you won't be able to downshift automatically when you florr it. No big deal.

Sounds to me like its probably time for a rebuild. The whining sound is probably the gears in the tranny pump. Reverse and 3rd gear us the direct clutch. If the tranny fluid is black (its supposed to be red) and smells burnt its toasted. Hate to confirm the bad news.

I was a service technician specializing in automatic trannys at a Chevy dealership in the early 70's (yes, I'm old as dirt).

DOH! Kid Vette may have nailed it! Check the smell of the fluid! If it smells burnt then it's rebuild time.

It didnt smell real burnt up nor was the dust sludge really any worse than I had expected.

Find a good trans shop and have them rebuild it. No need to buy a new one.
It may be something simple.

I worried if I have someone do the rebuild and fix whatevers up with it right now and I save some cash doin' the remove/install myself that I will wind up wasting money when something else goes wrong with the tranny later on down the road.

If they do a full rebuild and fix whatever is worn/broken it should last you a LONG time. Turbo 400 is one heavy duty trans!
