I noticed that the rear seal on back side of my trans has a slight leak.
I have a 1971 4 Speed.
Is this a easy change out and any thoughts on how to go about this????
Lift her up and remove your exhaust if it interferes with the oil pan removal. You may have to disconnect your steering linkage from your idler arm/pitman arm to get clearance for the pan also. Remove oil pan and remove oil pump and remove rear seal block. wala rear seal comes out. To remove upper seal, I used a toothbrush handle ground down to ppush it up and out. You dont want to scratch your crank.
Its really not that difficult, except for the exhaust part.
Install new rear seal according to direction with a sealer on the seal block mating surfaces and use a 1 piece oil pan gasket from Fel-Pro.
Piece of cake.
EDIT:John D - Silly me I thought Engine rear seal so never mind. :jester
The transmission real seal on a 4 speed is a snap to replace. Drive line out, use a punch or screwdriver to remove the old seal and tap in the new one until it seats. Remember to coat the lip of rubber with a little oil. Takes about an easy hour to do start to finish. They're notorious leakers.
