Just wandering what you guys do or did when you started putting your motor together. I know that there are many different typse of head gaslets and you should use what is recommended for the head. I am going to be running the Edelbrock aluminum heads and didn't know if you guys had ever bought complete gasket kets or do you buy the individual sets. Hope this made sense.
IMO, you can do better than those generic gasket kits, but it will cost you slightly more. Mainly, you'll want to pick the exact head gasket that fits your heads, the exact gasket for your intake, and the newer Fel-Pro 1 piece oil pan gasket is much nicer than the old 4 piece design. Can't get those in a kit.
In my opinion, buy the kit and set it aside, then get all the critical gaskets one-by-one, and use the generic stuff for the distributor, valve covers, timing chain, fuel pump, thermostat, water pump, etc.
I don't have a jeg's or summit in front of me, but you might be able to just order the r.a.c.e gasket set, along with the custom intake, head, oil pan, and exhaust gaskets.
The generic stuff works, but they're not made for high performance use.
The generic head gaskets I used 5 years ago took about 2 weeks of scraping with solvent to fully remove their residue from the block and heads. For me, the time spent on cleaning up the mess justifies the extra money spent on premium gaskets.
