the P1 senses the 8 breaker-point lobes on the distributor shaft. no magnetic ring is used.
my feeling is that the P2 came out to replace the original P1 because they were having reliability problems, not for more performance. my local parts store stopped selling Pertronix units because they were having so many returned. well, my P2 didn't even outlast my P1.

that is a good post. back when i was running a pertronix, i couldn't see it offering much of a performance gain but i thought it couldn't hurt. i was after reliability, but it was much worse.
has anyone ever developed an optical system? hmm...
