Default Firestone PV41

Anyone has experience or opinion about the Firestone Firehawk PV41 http://www.1010tires.com/Firestone_F...V41_tires.html?
I am looking at it because it is one of the very few tire offered in 235/70R15 dimension with a V speed rating.

I believe the PV41 is a tire Firestone puts on Police, State Police, Sheriff cars etc. My suggection would be to talk to a law enforcement officer who has them on his or her unit and get their opinion of them. Just my 2 cents, Gene :seeya

Gene,

You are right: This tire was made for law enforcement. However I do not believe too much in the opinion of one or two drivers. I would rely first on facts (definite testing procedures) or on statistics on a large sample of opinions. I posted this question to figure out why Corvette drivers are not familiar with this tire: Is it because the only experience they have was bad or because they just don't know it? Given the minimal response I get, I lean toward the second option. Also, I tend to believe that if the police have had a tire developped just for them, it is for better performances than what's available as standard; otherwise, what's the point to pay for such a development?
Still, I will follow your advice and try to get direct opinions.
Thanks.

Additional comments:
I do not feel this tire falls in favor with Vette enthusiast for a couple of reasons; 1) It is NOT available in wider profiles such as 60 or 50 series in a V rating ( I believe Pat71 was mistaken ) 2) It's kind of "Pricey" for a 70 series tire and is only available in Blackwall.
In closing, Goodyear make a similar "Law Enforcement" type tire you might want to check out but I believe the Firestone is a lot less in price. If you want 70 series tire, the Firestone is certainly worthy of consideration. Sincerely,Gene :yesnod:

When I read your thread, I took it as if you were intrested in Firestone Firehawks, not that exact tire. I do not have that tire so I can not comment on that exact tire but I do have the SS Firehawks 255x60x15 RWL had them for 4 years, There a good tire and this Sat I am puting on Indy Firehawks 255x60x15 rwls. So I don't beleive I was mistaken. I do belevie people are to quick on telling people about a mistake. If your looking for that exact tire I wish you good luck. :banghead:

To clarify for Pat71vette:

In regard to the the Firestone Firehawk being unavailable in a 60 series, I meant to say specific to V-rated Firestone Firehawk PV40 and its predecessor the PV41. Please accept my apology if I offended you.

Sincerely, Gene :)

Man, it's fun spending other peoples money.... :D

As for the police tires. all the Highway patrols here in Az get their tires from goodyear. they have a special shipment. and NO they won't sell them to the public......

I am sure they are great tires. They just are'nt offered in 235/70R15.
I have stock 1971 rims and I don't want to go to 255/60R15 because they rub in the front.

My local Fireston dealer can sell me the PV41 for $120. I am looking for feedbacl from users.

Thanks anyway.

We use the V-rated, 70-series, Goodyear RS-A on our Crown Vics, both 15 and 16 inch sizes.

I had those same tires on my vette before I bought my 16 inch rims. I thought they were great. I had 225/70 and they rubbed a bit with the 15X8 inch torque thrust wheels up front. But as far as handling I could tell a big difference from the S rated tires I had.

By the way tirerack has them for 110 http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Sizes....=Firehawk+PV40

I don't expect to be able to tell the difference between a S and V rated ... as long as they don't blow up between 118 and 149 mph.

Tire racks offers the PV40 which I understand are the generation before the PV41. Hopefully they improve from one generation to the next.

You CAN tell the difference in the V speed rating. I went through this a couple of years ago. I didn't know about the PV40's until after I bought my SS20's .. The SS20's, replaced the old BF Goodrich Comp TA's that are no longer made. I immediatley noticed a Huge decrease in handling. When the tires I have now wear out I am going for the PV40's. As you know the selection of performance tires in our sizes is getting pretty pethetic. Years ago I put a new set of Goodyear GT's on another Corvette I had. I took off the old version TA's which were not at all like the current ones. The new Goodyears were terrible in comparison. They not only had less traction and handling but were out of round and difficult to balance. After I trued them (one was almost 1/4" out of round) and spun them on the car they were tolerable but, No more Goodyears for me. I like the SS20's As for ride and smoothness but they are not a performance tire by any means. We will eventually not be able to get any tire in the correct sizes in 15' rim size. supply and demand. One of the forum members called BF Goodrich about this and the answer wasn't encouraging.

I am not sure I fully understand: If I read you well, you have tried the PV40's at one point in time, and you like them better than the SS20's. If this is correct, why don't you go with the PV40's again?
Also, do you have any info about the difference between the PV40 and the PV41?

NO ..I never knew about the PV series because they don't advertise them. If I had I would have bought them. I was just trying to give you some of my tire experiences. Side wall rigidity and rubber compounds are very different as the speed rating increases. The average driver only seems to care about how long a tire lasts and that it is smooth. More aggessive drivers that are into cars tend to care more about traction and handling. You pay for that in reduced tread wear and higher initial cost. I really can't wait to get some PV 41's but the tires I have know are still like new.. Maybe in a couple of years....
