What's the difference with an early and late alternator?
Can either be used on my '69?
Also with A/C and a small radio amp do I need a 66 or 78 amp unit?
The early unit is 78 amps.
My '69 is a late built but has some early parts.
My present rebuilt unit has the power feed at 12 0'clock and plug in in top at 2 o'clock.Don't know the amp number.
Joe, all 69's corvettes and up had internal regulators but no other Chevrolet did until 71. So(most) vendors or rebuilder's often group all chevy's and many other GM units into pre/post 71. Many vendors ( Delco doen't rebuilt their own stuff so this may apply even to their stuff ) just assume that a Corvette is just a Chevy. Now here's another SMALL issue... Corvettes have a smaller crank pulley so the alternator turns slower than it would on a full size car. That makes the standard generic GM alternator not put out enough amps at idle. With wipers, A/C and light there may be a 30 amp discharge at idle. Alternators for most Corvettes of the era were designed with more windings so that wouldn't happen. I went through four alternators from Auto Zone for my old 71(auto) trying to get one that would work at idle. They all worked fine at 1K but not at 600. Finally I bought an A/C Delco New and problem sovled. The people At Auto Zone could not understand what was wrong because their book said I had the correct aternators so the problem must be something else. I went 'round and 'round with them untill I proved that the AC delco unit worked and theirs didn't. Very frustrating. You need a Corvette specific alternator to avoid the same problem I had.
Larry
The AC Delco's above are listed for '69 vettes.
Probably don't have the small pulley needed.
Where can I get a new Delco?
Got a part #?
Amps?
Hi Marc.
So far the wife and I are planning to come down to FLA in Jan.
Looking forward to see you and Larry along with Lisa and Paula.
Scott and who ever else who will attend the show and Larry's BBQ.
