have any of you had your vette plastic media stripped? if so how well did it work? the time is getting closer to strip the car and any input would be great
thanks craig
I had it done to my car it works well but you got to bring it to someone who know what there doing. Its not a perfect process there is going to be plenty of body work to do when it is done. If your car is not peeling or cracking I would consider not having it done. It also cost about 700 bucks and when you get the car back your going to be amazed how those plastic pellets get everywhere. I found them in my console.
the car has several areas cracking on the deck area and the tops of the front fenders plus it has been painted before. Thanks for the reply
thanks craig :steering:
We had the wifes 72 stripped with plastic media. There's still plenty sanding to be done when the car is finished! If they go too far there will be plenty gel coat work needed. I sent it out to Classics Plus (near me) and they did a pretty good job. If I were to do it again I would have removed the doors and hood etc before I gave it to them. They use tape to cover all gaps between panels so you'll be left with a nasty hardline that requires careful sanding. With the doors and hood removed they can also do the jambs and blast all the way to the edge of the panel so theres no paint left around the perimeters of the panel. Also saves hours of hand sanding the jambs. The plastic can really tear up gel coat if they go too far so tell them to stop at the factory primer and sand the rest off yourself. You'll find plastic bits all over for quite a while. It costed us $660.00 and I felt it was money well spent.
You also should suggest having "NEW" media used for your job. Too many places use old media that could be contaminated with grease and oil. This grease and oil could end up impregnated in you fiberglass. Guess what will peal after a while....yup...your paint.

There is no reason to remove the factory primer. Factory primer gives you a base coat for block sanding.
:iagree: why take off more then necessary, it's just flushing money down the drain. I still like the razorblade method the best, might be a lot of work but it's cheap and you peel the layers off and keep the primer in tact.
