GM ZZ4 vs GM HT383
Noticed a lot of people have put the zz4 in their cars..some have done 383's.. I'm looking for reliability of the crate motor and the gm covrerage.. But if looking for a car for the steet use only..and just want the stop light to stop light low end power and torque which would be better.. Both are by Gm and both have same waranty.. Can't tell by the torque and HP curve which will pin you back in the seat and squeel the tires more??

Re: GM ZZ4 vs GM HT383 (LAvetteman)
I know the ZZ4 has 405 lbs/tq. It idles perfectly smooth and has plenty off the line power. With a true 383, you already have bored the motor once, and the ZZ4 is a "virgin" block.
The ZZ4 gives you better parts with the aluminum heads. Camshaft: Hydraulic roller tappet (#10185071)
Valve Lift (Intake/Exhaust): .474/.510
Duration (Intake/Exhaust): 208/221 @ .050 tappet lift
with a Quadrajet carburetor, 1 3/4 headers, and low-restriction mufflers produces 355 horsepower (at 5250 rpm) and 405 lb.-ft. torque (at 3500 rpm).
The 383 is a 325 HP @4500 rpm / 415 lbs/tq at 3500 rpm engine. Running a 9.1 compression and a 5000 RPM red line. You get iron vortec heads instead of the aluminum heads. The camshaft: 14097395 Hydrolic Roller Tappet Lift: 0.431 I, 0.451 E
Duration: 196 I, 206 E @ .050 Lift Centerline: 108 ATDC I, 116 BTDC E
"Developed as a truck engine, with a truck grind roller cam, heavy duty forged powdered metal connecting rods, forged crankshaft and hypereutectic pistons the HT 383 is designed to be worked. 325 horsepower at 4500 rpm doesn't hurt either. The HT 383 is an ideal replacement for any 1975 and older carbureted truck engine or off road application. "
Price - ZZ4 is $50 cheaper.

For '03, GMPP released the 383CID/425HP version motor.
9.7:1 cr, 425 HP @ 5400/460 TQ @ 4500, steel crank, aluminum 'FAST-BURN' heads (2.00"I/1.55"E valves), a cam with specs of .509"I/.528"E, 222*I/230*E @ .050" lift, etc. It makes 70 HP, and 45 ft/lb TQ more than the ZZ4.
Known as the ZZ 383/425, it's P/N is: 12498772
According to my '03 GMPP catalog, the 383 CID crate-motors come with a 3.800"-stroke crank, not a 'standard' 400 CID crank (3.750"-stroke), so these blocks may NOT be bored .030"-over upon delivery...

Re: GM ZZ4 vs GM HT383 (QuickVet)
Scooter posted that there is a delay in the release of the ZZ383 do to a problem with the rod manufacturer going out of business, think the eng is about $5k. That eng does sound like the cats arz for a drop in sb, I wish it had the same comp ratio of the ZZ4 and was a little cheaper in the shortblock form. And it is a 3.80" crank so the block is a stock 4.00" bore.

Peak torque is 435 ft.lbs at 4000 rpm, but the HT 383 makes over 400 ft.lbs. from 2500 to 4000 rpm. Plus the hp was listed as 340
Also CHP magazine did a build up up this engine and got it over 500 of tq; http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/66278/index.html
I would think stoplight to stoplight the 383 would be the winner. Also if you want to mod. your engine at a later date this would be an ideal canidate.
