'71 Muncie Identification

When I bought this vette I was told it had the *Rockcrusher* M-22 tranny in it. That theory went to hell after I got this vette prepped to change the exhaust system tonight. The tranny casting #3925661 appears to be correct for the '71's and so does the # P1D06A, but that shows as a M-20. Serial # is C11614493 by the way. Did GM put M-20's in vettes in '71's or did this tranny come out of another GM car of that year? A search on *71corvette.com* only shows the M-21 & M-22 as the standard Muncies for that year.
If it is the original trans for your car, then the serial number on the trans should match the serial number on your car.

1= 1971
D= month of build
06= day of month
A= wide ratio (M 20)
I have the same original tranny in my 71. As mentioned, nothing wrong with em.
Don't feel like the lone ranger, I was a misinformed buyer way back when as well. The guy I bought my 71 from said it was an original big block car, had the LS6 console and all. I didn't pay an all original small block price for it, but it still feels funny when you find out the truth. I found this forum and a few of the old timers here set me straight on how to determine whats what. Then I talked to a previous owner of my car and he confirmed what I had learned.

Like everyone else, I hate to find misrepresentations. It just makes you wonder what else you might run into. The 4 speed shifts great, so I have no problems with it. It's actually good that I know it was an option and I probably read "71corvette.com" wrong.
And thanks for the info about the tranny ser# matching the engine ser# Pete79L82. I didn't know that. And yes they do match. One more bit of the puzzle gone as to how original this vette is. I'm well pleased that everything so far shows that what came from the factory is still on this vette as far as major components.
Thanks for the answers from everyone.
