As I was driving the other day I noticed that the steering column in the shark is loose. Loose as in up and down excessive play motion. I haven't taken anything apart yet or looked into this latest problem/repair. Has anyone tackled this repair task as of yet? Any help would help. Thanks in advance. Paul.
If its a tilt unit and its loose in the knuckle, the column will have to come out for repair. If the whole column is moving up & down, there are two bolts under the dash that bolt it in place that may have loosened. This isnt very likely though, probably that knuckle joint.
Removing the column isn't that bad of a job... good luck.
I have seen the pins in the pivot area shot before, I have also seen where the end of the shift tube (the main tube that runs down to the floor) is broken off. Both of these require removal of the column from the car for a bench rebuild.
My solution was to replace the upper column bearing. You are looking at a 1967 so the pics are not directly applicable to your 1980. But I would imagine there is an upper bearing there as well. The catalogues show one. I offer this simply as a possibility to consider. Jim S. will give you a more informed short list of solutions.
I had the same problem and sent it out to Mr. Lenard Bass in Spring Texas.
it took more than 6 months and I only recieved part of what I had sent him.
I do not recommend you do the same. I have read some good things on this forum about http://www.columnsgalore.com/paint.htm Might give them a try.
