Helped my buddy refurb the wheels off his 81 a while back. Figured I'd post the pics. Took a lot of work, but they came out pretty good. :)
Used lots of Mother's aluminum polish, some emery cloth, a fine emery sanding wheel on a drill, and a LOT of elbow grease!! Then polished them with some regular wax!

Here is the before and it actually looks better than it did in person:
Here is the after:
Here is the car before wheel polishing, new front spoiler, and a good wash and wax:
I did just about the same thing with my 81 rims. They came out great. In fact I have the rims off now because the vette is put away for the winter. I am doing the whole process over again. I have one wheel done and it even came out much better that the first time. I used one of those green scrubby things my wife uses on the dishes and some rubbing compound. Then finished off with Mother's polish.
The next time your buddy has the tires balanced / rotated, tell him he can request the weights be put on the inside only. I asked my tire shop to do that and they said it was no problem at all.
Nice job on the wheels. I'd like to do mine someday.
i have centreline style rims on mine and have been using autosol polish and they have come up a real treat. i put pics up when i have finished all four
