It's a stock 80 L82, I rebuilt the carb, new plugs, timing at 8, can't find any vaccum leaks, checked dist, vaccum advance seems to work,(everything I know of). I rarely put it to the floor, but when I do...it takes off great until 2500-3700rpm, It just seems to die and pop? as soon as it hits 3700....boom it takes off? idles great now, part acceleration is wonderful. Just wondering if anybody has ever dealt with this. Not really a big problem since I don't race or drive hard, It just irratates me. Thanks for any ideas!
Sounds like it's going lean on hard acceleration, perhaps when secondaries kick in. What kind of carb? Guess you said stock, so a Q-jet. I'd start there.
Secondary metering rods? Then primary metering rods. The air horm gasket, if not installed exactly right, can interfere with the operation with the lifting of the primary metering rods, which would cause it so be lean on acceleration.
thats what I was thinking, but boy I do not want to take it apart again!
Thanks for your help, and it is a Qjet, I've rebuilt holley's and edelbrocks with no trouble, but Qjets always confuse me!
Doug Roe's book on Rochesters is great! About 18 bucks! If you pick one up, see page 85, shows that exact problem on the air horn gasket. That, with a little luck, is a 10 minute fix.
Before you tear anything else apart check the fuel system. Many times having a clogged sock in the gas tank will restrict flow under hard acceleration or high rpm. Also check the fuel lines for any damage or kinks that could restrict flow. i had a bad load of gas that clogged the sock on my 74 and it would barely get past 1500 rpm. Good luck.
