Default 12 volt source for choke

Holley's instruction say "suitable ignition activated 12-volt sources are most electrical relays, as well as the leads to accessories, such as windshield wipers."

Any suggestions on an under-hood source in our cars? The old Holley was hooked to the coil, which Holley says not to use.

Early 70s have orange and beige wires underhood that activated various emissions parts. I would try one of those. Particularly there is an orange wire I think meant for the TCS circuit on the back of the rh head. Try that one with your voltmeter and see when it has power.

Horn relay.

All power should come from the horn relay.
Thats where the Altenator senses voltage.
If you take power from anywhere else you're gonna confuse the altenator
( thats Bad )

If so, make sure it's hot only when the key is on. If you have a constant 12V+ to the choke, it won't do you any good.

I ran a wire through the 4 hole grommet in the firewall to the fuse block spade marked 'IGN', it only has power when the ign is on.

When I was running an Edelbrock w/elec choke, I spliced the red wire to the wiper motor. You couldn't miss mine, it was red and laying right on top.

I went through the firewall to the IGN terminal on the fuse box. Since the horn relay is hot all the time, the choke will be warmed up all the time and never function correctly.

Connect to an ignition switched source like on the windshield wiper motor.
It's a yellow wire on mine.

Oops :bb
I forgot about that. I run a relay block up by the horn relay so all power comes off the horn relay and is switched by a wire going to the fuse block.
This way all power comes off the right spot and there is very little drain on the ignition switch

My Q-jet had a anti-diesel solenoid so I used the wire from it when I changed to the Holley.

I just had my Q-Jet rebuilt and had him install a elec. choke. Good idea's on where to pickup the 12v.

Okay the best source I have read about for this is that wiper motor wire that stays hot all the time. But unless you can live with a hot choke even when engine is off and ignition switch is in Accessory or Run then you need to relay this choke power wire with the oil press switch sender unit. This will turn off choke power when oil press is low (engine off).
When the engine is running the choke is supposed to be on/hot all the time to keep the choke blade open. But when the engine is off so should be choke power to cool off choke element and close choke again for start up.
The coil is the wrong place to source power as is draws its current through a resistor wire (or resistor ballast) and that will in turn drop voltage to coil for making sparks.
