Which cam for my BB?
I am doing engine work this winter and the cam is going for sure, its a Crane Powermax 296-2, duration 296/304 and lift of 553/573. My motor is too doggy until about 3000 then it takes off. I want more of a smooth idle and more torque down low. Looking for advise on what company, Crane, Comp, etc. I am going to stay with hydraulic. Thanks!

With your heads, too little cam could wind up losing much more power in the mid-upper ranges than it gains at lower rpm. I'd suggest not going too much less without also going to smaller heads. A couple cams that I think might work for you are the Comp XE-274 (230/236 @ .050, .552/.555 lift) or the Comp 286H (236/236 @ .050, .556/.556 lift). Both have 110º LSA but can be custom ground with wider angles to help smooth the idle even more. There are lots of other cams out there that would accomplish what you want by other mfg's also. Just stick with a name brand and you can expect comparable quality.
