Default Muncie countershaft leak ?

My Muncie has been leaking for quite some time now. It is getting worse. If the car sits for a week there is a little puddle in the front of the trans. It is gear oil and I hava had it out many times before for bad gears and have been thinking of fixing this. If I remember right you bore out the hole in the case and there is a bushing and/or a seal for this. Who has these parts or are they common parts. I do have access to a machine shop who can bore this out. Any other procedures I am missing. Don't have the funds for a 5 speed right now.

Gordon, Did you call 5 speeds.com to see if they offer the parts? I think you'll have to get the housing stripped down and setup it up in a Bridgeport. You have to pick up the center of the hole, then bore it out to fit a steel bushing that the counter shaft fits. If a repair bushing isn't offered then you have to make one in a lathe. I've seen where a counterbore is placed in the outer side of the case so a plug can be installed to seal it. I think they show that on the web site under new Muncie M-22 rebuild? The important thing is you find center so that the shaft will still be in line.
Good luck,
Gary

I have not called them but I thought the plug was just for the new supercase that they have. I think the new case is thicker at that point which allows the plug to be put in. I might be wrong but that would solve the problem. I figured it would have to be setup in a Bridgeport and made exactly perfect. Disassembly is no problem, I have had it apart to many times already.

Gordon,
Thats probably where I saw the plug too. I'm not sure about the case thickness. Also I used a permatex anerobic sealer on the counter shaft,if not too worn it will work pretty good.I can check the number of it when I get back to the shop if you want. We have about 8" snow here so I'm not going back till tomorrow.

Actually I believe you want to move it up a few thousands.

Hi Howard,
Why a few thousands? If the bushing is on center with the original hole then the countershaft would be back to the original position. Are you thinking of gear wear or did I miss something?

Is your case #'s matching? I'd feel better with just a new case, seeing as how that's a pressed fit for the coutershaft. My Super T-10 in my camaro has a bushing machined in it for just this reason and it's now starting to leak. Next time I rebuild it I'm getting a new case. 5speeds.com had a really nice heavy duty muncie case, have you taken a look at that?

That was another option I was considering. I keep dumping money into this Muncie. I guess it is still cheaper than a new 5 speed. It is a numbers matching case. The new case does look good.

Gordon, Theres a guy in New York, his name is Steve, he rebushes muncie cases for me, Larry Fisher, Ed Hartnett and a lot of other muncie rebuilders. When he bores out the case for the new bushing he offsets bores the case to move the pin hole .005" closer to the main shaft for better gear contact area. Then installs an aluminum bushing front and back for a nice tight press fit. Steve has rebushed over 50 cases for me and my customers and havn't had any problems. I usually have 10 to 15 rebushed cases in stock all the time if you need one...Hope this helps...Crash

I would prefer to keep my case as the numbers on it match the car. If I decide to go that way I'll let you know. What does he charge to drill and rebush the case. Thanks for the info
