Has anyone out there ever tried to complete a body lift with an engine lift - the two ton boom type?
Did you have to shorten the slings? How did you do it?
I have a convert and was going to lift with the doors on but the lifting hooks dont clear the doors... I get the lifting straps from CC. I'm afraide they will damage the doors and fenders. Has anyone see this problem?
Seems like the doors have to come off for to be able to get the hooks on the rocker channnels.... does this sound right...
I lifted mine with the doors on but I put a 2X4 between the straps so they wouldn't pull the doors in. The hooks grab the rocker channels (make sure the rockers are not rusted out) at the back of the doors and in front of the doors. I don't know if you will get enough lift with a cheery picker. It needs to come up about 24" 's to clear the gas tank and motor. Less if you drop them. If you shorten the straps they will have a lot more load on the doors and windshield frame.
It really was not very hard. Did it with an engine hoist. Actually I think the 5 of us there could have lifted it. But we suspended it while we placed my Kwiklift under the body and supported it.
Only items I took out of my roadster....the two seats.....got 6 of my buds together...a keg, the wife grilled some brats...three on a side, and the body was off in two minutes, cleared the brake lines, and cleared me too...i was inside the engine bay, holding back the brake lines....u don't need a boom...just get a bunch of guys together....everything was unbolted....guys came over, and in two minutes the body was off...and we were poopie faced the rest of the afternoon.... :D
One trick I learned during my body pull to gain extra lift height was to lower the frame. I took the wheels off the car and put those wheel dollies that you can get from Harbor Freight under each suspension point. It gave me about 6 extra inches. And a lot of us these days could use an extra 6 inches, if you catch my drift.
Also there have been some good posts on braces for the door openings to save on weight, but not compromise structural rigidity.
