We are going to replace/upgrade the worn out points distributer in the '71/L48/auto/wAC to an electronic unit. Whats the best? The MSD unit costs more but offers a rev limiter that we really don't need and has an external controller. The recommended Mallory unit has a mechanical advance only. Whats the best? The motor is stock/original at 93K. We want to keep the engine bay as original as possible and need to retain the cable drive tach. Thanks. :chevy
How about rebuilding the stock distributor and converting it to electronic triggering with one of the kits available. Several companies make these kits to convert points dist to electronic. Im using the kit from Pertronix. You'll get mixed reviews from forum members about the Pertronix but many use it and like it. i have one on mine. There are other companies that make these conversion kits too. They cost about $100 or so. With these kits you can bypass your curent resistor wire and run a full 12v to the coil and even add a hotter coil. im using a accell 50k volt coil with my Pertronix II ignitor. I dont know how more "stock looking" you can get. Plus you can carry the points and condenser along. If theres ever a problem with the trigger the points can easily be put back in.
Mallory makes a nice kit, the "Uni-lite". "Pertronix" also makes a kit but someone recently posted about the troubles he had with the Pertronix after he did some wiring mods. You might do a search or look for a post by "cali68" (??) and ask him if it was the kit or his rewiring.

You can keep those retrofit kits, I'd stay with the original setup for a streetcar. I heard too many stories of them failing, points are easy to setup and last a while.
