Saturday I opened my hood to check the oil and as I extended it all the way open I assumed the hood prop fell into place as it usually does to keep it up and open, but I guess it needs to be oiled or something because it didn't set into place as usual so when I looked away for my oil rag and let go thinking it would stay up I suddenly heard a shocking BOOM! The hood crashed down from the fully open position! I nearly had a heart attack, not just from being startled, but also for fear I may have damaged something. So far I have not seen any cracks on the hood or along the edges of the front end that the hood overlaps when closed, and the latches still seem to function normally. The fall and resulting "crash" was dramatic. Could I have damaged something that's not immediately apparent. Where should I look for damage. Does the hood only make contact with the body at the latches when you close the hood? (I assume the hinge at the other end was probably not affected.) I hope GM assumed some ding-a-ling like me would come along and do this, and that they took that into consideration when engineering it so it could handle it. Sorry if I sound obsessed about it, but I feel like I broke something even though nothing is jumping out. I'm just kicking myself for letting this happen. :banghead:
Re: OUCH! hood fell and crashed down (Corvette_fetish)
There is a Vette guy. More worried about the hood than his own health. I doubt you did any damage. If it closes s and opens as normal and no paint cracks you should be OK. I'll bet now you check the hood before going into the engine.
Re: OUCH! hood fell and crashed down (Corvette_fetish)
That happened to a buddy of mine with his 79 Vette when we were in school. He opened the hood to check on a readiator leak, the wind pushed the hood back released the proprod & it crashed down on the back of his head
Put a couple of teeth through his lip but luckily didn't lose any. Took a half dozen stitches to close every thing back up. He was pretty :mad about the chipped paint though.

Yea, but at least his head broke the hood's fall! My numb skull was looking for my oil rag, so it wasn't their in the way to prevent the hood from slamming all the way down!

You may see this happen at car shows from time to time. The wind pushes the hood forward far enough to release the kick stand, resulting in a WHAM!!! of the hood closed. Whoops, there goes another crack free paint job on a 57 fuelie......
If there is anything setting on top the engine like a replica model car or the like than it becomes a crash course in new curse words for everyone.
