Default Differential Plug Question

I removed the plug to check the fluid level. Is the plug supposed to go back flush with the differential cover or is there some extra threads on the plug? It seems that when mine is completely tight there is some extra threads exposed. Is this normal? It is a 1980 model and does not seem to be leaking.

The plug uses tapered threads so it is normal to have some threads showing. With the aluminum Dana rear ends you don't want to tighten it too much and strip out the threads. (I also have an 80 that I am in the process of rebuilding.)
