Thanks to everyone who replied to my question on body mounts. Now I need
to know if any of you have removed the rear suspension cross member and
replaced the bushings and how difficult is it.
As Ed T said there are threads in the archives on this. Some went easy, some went not so easy. :smash:
You might obtain a copy of the Van Steel suspension video, it was a big help to me as I rebuilt the front and rear suspension of my 1980. The 1980-1982 rear crossmembers (Dana) are aluminum and were pretty easy to work with. I think the crossmembers on the 1979 and earlier cars are more difficult.
A copy of the year specific GM Shop Manual and a copy of the A.I.M. for your year will be VERY helpful in working on the car. :)
The 63-79 crossmember bushings need to be pressed out. Well they don't need to be but if you have a press it takes about 5 minutes to do. If you don't have a press, you'll need a bench vice, chissle and hammer. Those tabs around the bushing need to be bent up. Watch your knuckles. You may need a second person if you vice is small. After you get those tabs straight up, pound the heck out of the bushings until they come out. You may want to get a 3 or 4 lb. hammer for that. :smash: The new bushing should go about 3/4 the way in and you may need to :smash: those in all the way. Just hit the outside of the bushing. It won't damage it b/c those bushings are so thick. Once you get the bushings all the way threw, take a small hammer and :smash: the tabs over. Good luck. If you have ?'s about it you can always give me a call.
