Need help with timing light
My timing light and dwell meter have to be hooked to the positive and negative battery terminals. Since the battery is behind the drivers seat, is there an alternative place within the engine compartment?

I use the hot lead out of the back of the alternator.

Will that still work even if you're just trying to time it while the car is being cranked over?

Yes, the positive terminal on the alternator is always hot as long as the battery is connected.

I normally use the power line to the ballest resistor or the coil for power.

+ to either the positive lead on the back of the alternator, or the horn relay (just under the drivers side fender on my 73)
- to any bare metal that is clear of belts and moving parts.
