Ok My dad had a little problem with my power steering pump and a loose cap for the last 2 and a half months. I need to know how i can clean my entire engine easily. First off i dont care if it hurts the hoses, they are all going to be replaced. Second off Im not looking at show condition, just getting away from PS fluid on everything and the occasional drip on the exhaust manifold that gets a bit smelly.
Im thinking remove the air cleaner, cover the carb, distributor, alternater, and other electronics, and everything infront of the radiator along with the fenders. Then spray it down with some simple green, let it sit for a few minuites, then hose it down. The entire engine compartment needs to be washed out, and i dont want to sit there with little rags for two days. Could this work or would it harm anything. There is basicily one PS pumps worth of fluid spread evenly on the engine, including the hood insulation.
Anybody have experience with this type of stuff. The other options are either sit there with rags for a day or so or get it professionally done, which id rather not spend my money on.
Im neevr letting my dad take care of my car again.
"Oh so thats what that smell was"
:mad
There was just some talk about simple green being banned from use in aviation for some sort of bad effect on parts and whatnot. Don't know the truth behind that or not.
I would just cover/remove my electricals and use some sort of degreezer and a whole lot of wiping action. While maybe your best bet would be to use one of those steam action deals if its real funky and just nozzle it all over your particular issue areas...
my "paticular issue areas" would be everything except the inside of stuff. The fan blew it everywhere. We are talking oil pan to hood insulation, radiatior to fire wall. suspension and air filter were not spared. Its not a immediate nessecity but id like to get it done in the next week or two when its not too cold out. Those steam cleaners woudl work though. Oh yeah and just as a heads up PS fluid apparently likes to eat the outer half of old rubber hoses :p:
Most car detailing places will offer steam cleaning the engine. In vegas there are a bunch of mobile deals as well. Usually $60-70. The job they do is incredible. Most stuff will look damn near brand new when they are done. Its the same thing used car dealers use to make the neglected engines look factory new.
ok thanks for the tips.
If i can find a cheap place to steam clean then ill try that, maybe a used car dealer coudl do it for me. Problem in a real tight wad, that and i dont have much money.
