I'm looking to put a CD changer in my 1977. Seeing that I dont have the top rack installed on mine, space in back of the seats is at a premium. Has anyone had any luck installing a changer in the storage compartment behind the passenger's seat??? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
I put a 10 disc Sony and 2 small speaker boxes in mine and can still put the tops and 2 beers back there. I also thought about the compartment idea but then the jack would have to go.
Good Luck Mark
I have Sony 10 disc CD changer mounted in the passenger side storage compartment. I still have room for some small stuff (Quart of oil, tire fixer/inflator, some rags in the compartment.
I figure that CDs are '80s technology. So I am skiping CDs all together in favor of a Hard drive MP3 jukebox.
The unit itself which is about the size of a pack of cigarettes will stay locked in the center compartment, and the remote will be mounted in the center convenience console, along with an XM radio remote. The Jukebox can hold all of my albums. My CDs can stay at home where they are safe.
Another alternative to a 10 disc changer is an MP3 CD head unit. You can get about 12 albums on a single CD-R.
I'll be finishing the new stereo install this week. I'll post some pictures, and experience with the jukebox as soon as it's all up and running.
I mounted the CD changer in the jack storage compartment. I still have room for the jack anf the t-top bags. The remote control fits nicely in the indent in the console by the power window switches.
I fitted a 10 stack CD (Custom AutoSound unit) vertically in the storage compartment . I have a 68 vert, and the standard internal plastic compartment wasn't deep enough, so I modified it by cutting out a rectangle in the base so the CD unit would fit properly with the lid closed.
I had to modify the standard mounting brackets slightly to allow clearance, but its worked out very good. With the lid closed, the car looks completely standard. There's still enough room for a a few tools and a small fire extinguisher. My jack is wrapped in a woolen cloth, along with a cross wheel brace, and located with the spare tyre under the car.

I agree with JayM, but I figure that MP3 jukebox players are '90s technology :) . I've been bringing along my jukebox with about 500 complete CDs on it now for a few years.
What I really want is one of those car audio units with the MP3 drive unit included on the head unit. You just take the head unit into your house and download the MP3s from your PC (20- 40gig). I saw one once, but can't remember which brand it was. Does anyone here know what brand (or brands) have this feature?
Hi Z-Man
There are a couple choices. Alpine(i think) and Sony for name brand companys make head unit that include an internal HDD. You just rip the CD right into the unit. The Neo car jukebox is like a cd changer in that you have a remote control and a hidden box with a removable drive.
There is also the Music Keg by Kenwood. Same idea, just very expensive!
There is a company that makes an 802.11b conected car jukebox so you don't need to remove the HDD. you can access the files right in the garage!
I chose the the portable unit for price and versatility. $350 gets you a 20gig drive and lcd remote. It is also a portable HDD, FM tuner, and MP3 player. The entire unit is smaller than even the removable portion of the Kenwood.
The iRiver also has an optical digital out so I can add a high-end d/a converter if I need uncompromising sound quality in the car. But I suspect the analog line out will sound just fine :)
Thanks Jay - I'll check those out. I've had problems because if I do an internet search for a unit with mp3 capability, they all show up - but they just refer to the ability to play mp3 files from a CD. Big deal...

This would be cool. Maybe you could download tunes just by driving around until you got a signal!!?
