On early C3's there is a Transmission Controlled Spark (TCS) solenoid mounted on an intake manifold stud near the rear passengers side of the carburetor. How exactly does this part work? There is also a TCS switch/relay mounted on the drivers side firewall. How does this interact with the solenoid? What do these things monitor or control?
The solenoid is missing from my car and I'm unsure if it's something that was typically removed to enhance performance, or if it's something I'd be interested in reinstalling. The relay/switch is still on my firewall and connected to the wiring harness. Is the solenoid powered from the harness or is it vacuum controlled?
the way I understand it is it limits the amount of advance you can have until in high gear, an emissions thing. I have removed on a 73 I had and noticed no difference what=so-ever in performance or gas mileage. By the way you might score one in a salvage yard off a 70s chev or some type. I did and the part number was exactly the same for my 70. :D
