Default confused about engine assembly stamp

My '70 is supposed to be a 350/350 L46.

The assembly stamp is F1018CTN. If I'm correct, that translates to an engine assembled at the Flynn plant on October 18th. The CTN confuses me. For a four speed w/o AC it should be CTH. I can't even find an engine designation of CTN. Is this an L46 Engine? I am also wondering why my tach red lines at 5300rpm. My owner's manual states that tachometers provided with this engine red line at 6000rpm. Any ideas?

My references show CTN to be the early suffix code for the L-46 w/o AC. Are you sure that the tach redline is at 5300, or is that where the yellow/orange line starts? If it really is the redline, then you have a tach from a base smallblock car.

Does the VIN derivative stamp on the engine match? What is the build date of the car? Is it a 4 speed?

Thanks SB69 coupe,
The vin derived number is 10F408936. It matches the cars vin. I don't know how to read that for build date. And yes the tach does red-line at 5300. It sure doesn't look like its been changed.

Sorry, but it doesn't look right. Your car is an early May build with an engine assembly code of October. I haven't looked up the CTN code...try Mortec.com

Are you sure you read things correctly? You have an early May, 70 built car, with an engine assembled in October of ??? 69?? 70???? If 69, it's too early IMHO. If 70, the engine was assembled 5 months after the car was built, which is impossible for an original engine.

Are you sure it's an October build? Double check the date. Also...VERY IMPORTANT...check the block casting date. It's on the bellhousing flange...on the passengers side....near the distributor. It will be something like A 1 9 Where A is Jan, B is Feb., etc, 1 is the first day of the month, and so on, and 9 is the year....69, 79, etc. Also, what is the casting number of the block located on the drivers side of the bellhousing flange? Should be an 3970010. Chuck

My Smallblock ID guide shows the CTN code as a 70, 350/350, M/T, with A/C. Hershey :chevy :chevy :chevy

The Corvette black book shows CTN to be a non-AC 350-350, and another site http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/spcode3.html shows it to be for A/C cars....I would think the black book is more correct?

The assembly stamp is F1018CTN.
I'm suprised about this "F". I thought that was used on the C1 & C2 cars. Maybe even midyears. I swore '68-'82s used a "V" for Flint. Seems all my cars and most I ever remembered judging were also "V"s, NOT "F"s    This does'nt seem right to me.

I'm not always right, but I'm hardly wrong. :lolg:

You know, Paul's 100% correct. Went right over my head too. I believe that the Flint plant began to use the V instead of the F in 1967. Chuck
