For brake cylinders or lifter bores they are fine. Make sure you use a lot of lubricant. Would never use one on cylinder walls on any high performance application.

The bottle brush hone will work for breaking the glaze on the cylinder walls. However, if there is taper which you wish to remove you will need to use a conventional straight stone hone.

Make sure you use plenty of oil and don't dwell in one spot. The oil acts as a lubricant and also washes away the metal particles you've removed.

conventional honeWatch how far you bring the hone out of the bore. If you go past the center point of the stones you will taper the ends of the bore.

Do your homework and make sure everything matches that put into the motor. Too many times mismatched parts run like *poopie*

I am no expert by any means but I would agree that they should only be used for breaking the glaze. That is not a place that you want to try to save a few dollars. It will probably end up costing you in the long run. Your best bet is to take the block to a machine shop and have it checked for taper and power honed or bored if necessary. The small amount it will cost you, even if you have to buy new pistons, will be money well spent.

If the engine dosent absolutely have to be rebuilt right now id just run it how it is untill you have enough to get a bore job and new pistons. Either way its alot of work to tear your engine down and a ball hone just isnt worth it unless your cylinders are in almost new condition. If your cylinders are in that good of shape then there is no rush to rebuild it either.

If you do hone it out though select a brush that fits snug in the bore. Any thin type of oil would be good to use. Try to move the drill in and out at the right speed to get somwhere around a 30 degree cross hatch on the cylinder walls.
