OK, I know this is a stupid question, but I just bought my first Vette 2 weeks ago, I am a recent convert from Mustangs. Anyway, my car does not have back up lights. Most photos of other '68's that I have seen have them, but I have seen photos of others without. Can anyone give me some direction.
Re: Stupid Question - '68 back up lights (lbell101)
square backup light's were standard on 68's,but some people replace the lower bazel thus eliminating the lights, exhaust tip's and exhaust bazel's. why, i don't know.
when i bought mine it came with no lights, i restored it back to original and it was no cheep date.I was thrilled to find a pair of old light's at a vette shop near me and everything else i found new.
it took awile but it looked good now. good luck

Welcome to the forum!
Glad to see you have come over from the dark side, Luke.
'68, being the first of the sharks, has a whole lot of different bits to the '69 and later Vettes.
The '68 reversing lamps are supposed to be under the bumpers next to the exhaust. There has probably been a repair to the rear of the your car and the repairer could not find the correct panel for a 68 and put the more readily available 69 panel in. (69 rear valance panel is a one year only panel as well).
Check to see if it is a reproduction panel. If it has a smooth interior surface and is a grey/black color then it is probably an original part. If it has a rough surface due to being hand or machine laid fiberglass then it is a repro.
Along with all the above mentioned, there should be connectors hanging from your rear wiring harness to plug in the back up lights. Also, check to see if the back up light switch is mounted to trans. If you got all that, then a 68 rear valence panel and some 68 back up lights shouild put you back into business.
