Default Hooker Side Exit Headers and O2 sensor location

Is anybody running an O2 sensor with the Hooker side exit headers (ie. side pipes)? If so where is it located?

I am going to get my headers and side pipes from Jet Hot and they will weld in the O2 sensor.

Thanks, Eric.

Eric,
I installed mine in the 9:00 position if you are looking into the collector. You will have to enlarge a hole in the side of the frame and notch your rocker panel. If JetHot is doing the welding for you install the header first before you enlarge the hole in the frame or notch your rocker panel. I can take a measurement from the opening of the collector to the weld bung if you need it. Let me know.

A measurment would be great! Do you have any pictures of the O2 install?

Thanks, Eric.

I hope the pic shows up. I could not measure from the opening as the sidepipes are on. I measured from the weld at the collector back. From the weld seam it is 3-3/4" to the center of bung. Notice the cut is off. Thats because I did not bolt the header up first before cutting.

The picture shows up well. Thanks!

Is that on the passenger side?

Do you have any pictures that arn't so close up?

What controller are you using?

Thanks, Eric.

That's about the same position as mine but on the opposite header. I haven't had my O2 sensor connected yet, but intend to be using it in the spring ;)

Eric,
Thats on the passenger side. I'm using the Edelbrock ProFlo. If you need a better pic let me know what angle you want to see. It might be a little while before I can get the pic. I'm actually on the phone with Edelbrock right now.

Thanks Mark,

If you could take one at the same angle, just a little further away would be great!

Eric.

How far does the O2 sensor stick out of the pipe? What sensor are you using? I have bungs on my collectors, but there isn't much clearance to the frame.

Eric,
Here is the pic you wanted.

James the sensor actually goes in the frame about 3/4". I just enlarged an existing hole in the frame.

Mark,

Thanks for the pictures.

Your pipes look chrome. How did you get the O2 bung into the collector with the chrome pipes?

Thanks Eric.

From my understanding the best place to put the sensor is actually in the primary tube of the leanest cyl close to the head. So if you still got them hooked up get a pyrometer and shoot each primary and find the hottest one then you can decide if you want it there or not. This makes sure you are not running lean and also sends a signal the ecm sooner then when it is mounted in the collector.

Most sensors need to be installed at 10 degrees above horizontal so they do not get hit with all the water that is a by product of the combustion. They should be installed in the 10 o'clock to the 2 o'clock position. Also, they should be put in the collector instead of just sampling from one primary tube. Usually about 2 inches beyond where all the primaries connect should work. Most prefer driver's side as it is supposed to be the side that runs the leanest of the two.

If you use a heated (3 wire) sensor you should not have to worry about heat up times.

Here is a picture of mine. This is a pic the NCM used of my car from the 2002 Sharkfest Labor day event.

The folks at Edelbrock are very specific about the placement of the 02. It has to be on the upper side (10, or 2, or higher). The 12:00 position is best. The reason is anywhere lower will tend to collect moisture and then the sensor will fail, or give false readings. It also has to be approx 4" away from where all four tubes collect. Anywhere else, will give false readings. With sidepipes, there are not really many, or any options if you have to install one, and want to put it in the most appropriate location for peak performance.

I realize that the look of the external sensor is not the slickest thing since sliced bread. However, I have been amazed at how much "BUZZ" this thing creates.

I like to sit back and watch people at shows when they notice it. It is a dead give away that the car is fuel injected for the eductated viewer...and for the rest of the people...well, I have heard it all. Most think it is part of a flame thrower kit, others think it is some kind of valve.
