Ok, so I think I've got a bit too much for the alternator (its an old AC Delco remanufactured one). I've got Dual SPALs (30A max Ea.), a MP3 JVC Stereo, a Power Amp, an electric fuel pump, etc.
Question is, is there something that'll fit the stock mounts and stock belt that can handle the increased Ampreage I require?
Tough stuff makes a good 103 (?) amp alt that looks just like the orig, well except mine is chrome :D
Another thing thats important it to take power off of the horn relay since thats where the Alt measures the voltage. Take your power there and you will get 14 volts, take it somewhere else and you will get less, Yes even if you take it off of the battery...
I just keep replacing the AZone alternators known as 17SI series...they are the two wire regulator, flat inline, with the output stud....internal regulator design...rated at ~108 amps....works fine with all sorts of accessories...but I only have the ONE cooling fan...not a dual setup....
at any rate the thing is slightly larger in diameter than your stock ~70 amp unit....but takes the exact same hookup....assuming you have an internal regulator alt. ther now....
I say I"m on the 3-4th replacement under lifetime from AZ.....tired of that crap allready, BUT the only alternative is having a local rebuild the thing as another 120 bux....no thanx....I can change this thing once/year forever at a total ten minits time per change.....
someday I just may buy a new set of innards....and do it myself correctly...but that's another time and another day....
NO, the alt fits and work fine in the serp setup and the older V belts also...plug in application either way...just need watch the pulley offets to be sure the belt tracks rite....buy some large washers from the store for testing, maybe flip the pulley around to get differant offsets....gotta play with it some...
When I went to SPALS I also went with the Power master 100 amp from Summit Racing. It's rated at high amps at low rpm. 14.7 solid volts all the time. It's direct replacement for AC-DElco - The same connections

:iagree: I too am looking at the power master unit.
One thing for everyone to remember. When you upgrade the alternator, upgrade the wiring too. The wire that connects to the alternator can not handle a load much more than about 70-80 amps. After that it heats up and makes it even worse to transfer power. After much more the casing will catch fire and possibly torch your car. Replace that line with a lower gage wire (bigger wire) or run and additional low gage wire along with the stock line. I did the later, and ran a second line from the alt to the starter where it connects to the battery lead.
Bseery - Has an excellent point. Over the years I've replaced most of the stock tiny low amp wiring with larger gauge wiring. No brown outs! Always put inline fuses as close to the power source as possible.
Battery disconnect switch and a small fire exstingisher:)
