Default Rust Treatment... anyone ever use this?

I bought a 16 oz bottle of NAPA/Permatex Rust Treatment(Pt# 765-1232) this morning to give it a try on some of the rear frame that I had sanded down. It appears to be some pretty wicked stuff that's milky white in color that you brush on. It's amazing what the parts look like now after it dried to a black primer. Eats the rust, seals it and primes it.

And my hands should not rust. Read *all* of the directions dumbazz!

Anyone else tried it? Safe for fiberglass and filler.

Permatex makes the "Extend" products. I have a plastic jar of Extend with
the built-in brush on the cap. It sounds very similar - probably Permatex
OEM-ing their product for NAPA sales.

I think the brush-on Extend works WAY better than the spray-on type.

I still like the etching zinc primer with POR, but I would use the Extend
on projects other than my heirloom.

BTW - saw your Ebay ad ... looks great ... wish I could afford a new C3.
PS - the emblems you sent out arrived on Christmas Eve (day) at work.

I bought one spray rust preventative about a year ago from one of the automotive parts places that was really good, but it appears that Dupli-Color has bought most of the paint shelf space in them these days and their rust preventative stuff is absolute JUNK. Since I am not keeping this vette I'm just trying to do some finishing touches before it leaves and the Permatex stuff appears to work really good. I'll be doing some other parts tomorrow.

have used Extend  has to have rust to chem. react to, first used on
offroad tube frames , hit trees, rocks , other cars ,etc. stuck on better than
powder coat, and paint stayed on it as well as reg. primer

Oh man Winging It, I've known plenty of guys to get that on thier hands and lets just say your gonna be wearing it. I am stuck on por15 as my choice of rust sealing products, great stuff... I guess it doesnt hurt that they are in Nj and get me my stuff nice and quick.

The best stuff for rust is Eastwood's "Rust Encapsulator". If you have something that is rusty and you want to finish it, don't use POR-15. It tends to get small bubbles in it and these will show up in your paint, or you have to fill them in, and that takes more time. Eastwood has an independent study on their web site done by another restoration company that has all of the details. It's worth checking out.

i used the Extend product and coated the heck out of my radiator support about 15 years ago. The radiator mount today is in horrible shape. It appears the water finds its way under the primer and you end up with a worse condition than if you had done nothing.

We'll have to talk to people who have rustproofed their frames ect. with POR or whatever 20 years ago to see if its really going to hold up over time. I still think rust is going to find its way under the coating.

I've decided to smear petrolium jelly all over trouble spots and spray white grease in places i can't reach. I know thats bubba but its ok for my driver.

turtlevette,

15 years ago is like it sounds... a long time ago. The vette I have only had surface rust on the frame 32 years later as it was well taken care of and probably not put out in the harsh weather much. The Permatex solution I put on looks great and my best bets are that the next owner will treat it the same as we have and not have to worry about what you are talking about.
