Putting new carpet, cant get console off. I have taken all screws out, but the AC unit is still in, I can move in back/forward, but not up to remove it, am i missing something?? Looked at the AIM, but pics are no good. Please help?? Do I need to take the ac unit completly out?? If so..how?
The A/C control unit has to be removed before the console can be lifted out. Remove the top panel of the console, then a couple screws on the control unit and work it back down through it's mounting hole. I am assuming you have already removed the e-brake console, the side trim pieces on the shift console, and the 2 nuts securing the console to the center gauge cluster.
On my '72, besides the side screws, there is a bolt thru the back that you have to reach from the storage compartment. You might have to remove the storage box to see it.

I think you are referring to the e-brake console with this? It sounds like his problem is the shift console, of course the e-brake console must be removed first.
Its a '74 4-speed, I have removed the e-brake console. Removed the other 2 screws at the front of the console, along with the side plate things. Took the screws out of the console plate and now am looking at a metal plate with the AC unit attatched to it from the top. I removed the 2 screws that hold the AC to the plate, the plate moves, but the AC unit is somehow keeping the entire console held down somehow. Hope this helps with your expert diagnosis guys!! Thanks
If it's an automatic, the gear shift inticator has a hook that slips into the shifter coming from the transmission. It hooks into the console so you can see what gear it's in. That won't alow it to be lifted. Unhook it. It's on the right side.
The only thing I can think of is that the front reinforcement bracket is still attached or you might have to work the "metal plate" off the top of the various tabs of the console......there's not much movement available with this, as you know.......
Unless Bubba has been there before you, I can't think of anything else that would be attached to the console.....my '71 console was held back on the underside by two hex head screws attaching the fibre optic harness.......but you don't have fibre optics....so????
Here's some pics that may help.........you might want to post a pic yourself so we can see what you've got......
John.......I just remembered.......Do you have vent contol ***** on your console????? The cables for these are attached to the underside of the console by a hex head screw each side......difficult to get to because the wiring harness for the AC/Heater control unit gets in the way......I'm pretty sure this is the culprit.......it wasn't the fibre optics that were the bear to get out.....it was these two...... :banghead:
John, did you get that console off? That control unit will fit down through the adapter piece, it has to be turned and twisted just a certain way to clear. As others have mentioned, be gentle, it will go with a little patience.
