I swapped out my Qjet with a Holly 4175 650cfm when I had my engine rebuilt. I am having a problem with a heat draw down and was told by Holly that I a heat shield would cure this problem. I went to the auto parts store and the guy there is saying that I should have bought an Edlebrock instead of the Holly. Of the three choices Holly, Edlebrock, or the original Qjet which one is best to go with? The auto parts store will take the Holly back and get me an Edlebrock if I need to. What do you all think?
The original Q-jet is a great carb, if it's adjusted correctly. On start up, it’s rich, which makes for good starts, but then the choke pull down allows it to run at a reasonable cold idle.
And then when warmed up, low volume primaries let it run at "good gas mileage" in cruise, and then when you goose it, all hell breaks loose with those big secondaries!!!!!! But those secondaries need to be adjusted right so as not to “flood” the gas flow.
A Q-Jet is the best IMHO, but ONLY if it's tuned correctly. I've heard alot of good things about Edelbrocks, but I had a bad experience with one. You shouldn't have any trouble running a Holley. I've been told that they are much more forgiving as far as tuning goes than a Q-Jet, but I don't know from experience as I have never owned one. I would say any of the three should be fine as long as it's tuned properly. Since Holley seems to be pointing you in the right direction, I would stick with them. There's alot to be said for customer service. Good luck with whatever you decide on.
