Nearly empty tank, for a year, I'd say it's the gas. You probably have water in the gas, Florida is humid and condensation will form inside the tank. Also it could be a plugged fuel filter causing a lean condition (back-firing is a real clue to that.) Check your filters, and fuel.

I just got my car out of the shop were it was for over a year and 1/2. Part of my problem was gas. Then the carb fell out of adjustment. I had some loose exhaust bolts, and finally the plugs were fouled. If the gas does not fix it I would look at the plugs then the carb.

Drain the tank, replace with a full tank of good fuel, and replace the filter (while the tank is empty would be easier). That would be a good place to start. When storing, a full tank is better than a part full. And stabilizer should always be used.
