Default Has anyone ever re-dyed a carpet?

Have a faded black carpet on the back deck in one of my other cars. Looking to re-dye rather than replace the carpet. I found some carpet dye on line that I can order, but I'd rather not wait for delivery. SEM mades a spray that they say can be used to recolor faded carpet. I have used it successfully in the past on a steering wheel, but never on carpet. Has anyone done this? Any tips?

Thanks
Jim

The SEM spray should work fine. Black is almost impossible to screw up. When I need to refurbish my black carpet, I pick up some RIT at the grocery store, drop it in a spray bottle with some water and blast away. Let it dry overnight and it's good to go.

Dad and I did the same thing on his car. We heated the RIT dye up and then brushed it on. I like the spray bottle idea better, we didnt think of that.

I just got finished with the rit dye also. I took the carpet out and put it in a lined trash can filled with the hot water and dye, let it soak half an hour like it said on the box and stir, and am very pleased with the results. Takes a good day or 2 to dry but the color really gets deep in the fibers. Black also. Good luck

I had a used car salesman back in the 70's turn mr on to Rit dye. He used the dye in hot water mixed with dish washing soap and a brush. Works great.

You should follow up with a dip in cold water to "SET" the dye. This will keep it from rubbing off on your clothes or shoes when it gets wet.

It works good I dyed mine several years ago in my Vette. Jim

Can you buy RIT dye at any place like a Walgreens? And can you get it in almost any color or do you have to dilute it to get a lighter shade?

I used RIT black dye on my carpets and they came out great. Mixed it and put it in a spray bottle sprayed it on the black carpet that was faded to brown and it cleared it up right away.

I rubbed it in and let it dry then sprayed it again. that was last year and now 18 months later it still looks good. I have never had any trouble with it comming off on cloths or shoes. Once dry it was good t0o go. Inside or outside of my car never sees water so no sweat about it bleeding.
