Re: My first Vette (wilcox)
What I need help with is the engine. It's not a corvette engine. its a GM 400 small block. The casting number 3951511. The Vette came with an oil leak. From what i can tell it needs a new head gasket.
That block casting number corresponds to a '70-73 400ci 4bolt main block. I don't know much about the 400ci V8's but a lot of guys would love to have that block.
Usually with a blown head gasket you'd notice coolant usage, leaking and steam coming out of the exhaust.
Most old, old vette's have an oil leak. I have one, the source of which, I've been trying to locate for 3+ years now.
Position 1 = General Motors Division 1 = Chevrolet
Position 2 = Car line or series Z = Corvette
Positon 3-4 = Body style 87 = ?
Position 5 = Engine type DOES NOT APPLY Has 70-73 400 Small Block
Position 6 = Year of car 9 = 1979
Position 7 = Assembly plant location S = St. Louis
Position 8 -13 = Production sequence number
If it is a large aluminum differential and crossmember housing, then your car is 80-81. If it is a steel cross member with a smaller cast iron housing, then you have the 79 rear end which can only mount to a 79 or a pre 1980 frame.
The front clip and rear fascia can be changed with a fair amount of work :smash:
