Kenwood 800 Series bolted right into mine without modifications. Also put a 10-disc changer in the back and a bazooka sub. Only mods to car were a couple of small self tapping screw holes which you can't see when the items are removed. Put new speakers front and rear. Boxed the original 8-track and speakers and keeping them for the next owner.
Contact Custom Autosound (http://www.customautosound.com/) or search prior posts here for quite a few different setups.
I have one of their "wonderful" stereos in my 75. The previous owner had it put in approx a year ago and it's the biggest POS I've ever seen (heard?). And he paid $200 for this trash. In the past I've had $20 units in some of my old junkers sound even better than this. This thing makes me want to :U
Get another bezel, cut it and keep the original if this is important to you. Then install a real stereo unit.
My two cents worth.

EDIT: You can also check out http://www.vettespecialties.com/ for a custom bezel all ready to install a modern head unit into with no cutting. However, they are a bit pricey but do offer an additional option for you to consider.
Run, don't walk, RUN away from Custom Auto Sound. It is nothing but pure 100% overpriced junk.
If you are concerned with originality, buy a new bezel and cut it up. Keep the original with the 8 track in a box in your attic. I got my bezel off of ebay for $54. I'm putting in a pioneer cd deck w/ remote (I took out of my old F150), Pioneer 4X6 speakers in the front, and Pioneer 6X9 speakers in the rear. Probably going to do this sometime in March.
I put a JVC unit in my 77. Cut the Bezel with a dremel, no problem. If it was an older car with a metal bezel, I probably wouldn't cut it. Wiring was pretty easy.
Joe,
Awesome set up as everything else you have. Really enjoy seeing your pics.
For anybody who is interested, I have a one piece AM/FM/CB stereo unit complete with all the ***** and bezels and the microphone out of a corvette for sale. I also have a 78 and 79 radio service manual.
I purchased a Alpine system today that I am going to put in.
