Sorry to be a pain guys, I have a terrible time trying to find old threads on this board! I know a few weeks back there was some discussion about '68 ignition keying. My problem is simpler...I just need to get the darn thing removed from the dash so I can clean up and (un) paint. Someone painted things blue, the original is black, and that's what I'm returning to. If anyone has good suggestions for stripping old paint from vinyl trim without damaging the vinyl, I'm all ears...
Anyway, how to remove the lock cylinder/ignition switch? I recall it has something to do with a piece of stiff wire and the tiny hole in the faceplate next to the key slot, but 30 minutes of puttering with a paperclip have been fruitless.
It's my afternoon off, anyone who can help me have mercy and post quick, or direct me to the previous thread! :(
If the 68 switch is like the older ones, you straighten a paper clip and put it in the small hole. You then depress the paper clip. You should feel a slight spring load. You then put the key in the ignition, and turn it counterclockwise while pushing on the paper clip. The ignition cylinder should pop out. I've never done it on a 68, but I've done it zillions of times on 53-67's. Chuck
